Do you remember the following food risk in 2004? Click here. All of the products were manufactured in
China. There have been countless shocking stories since and just
a couple of weeks ago Australia became the next casualty. Click Here.
When it comes to tanning of sheepskins, Chinese tanneries
use carcinogenic dyes. These darken skins a lot better and more
quickly than enviromentally friendly dye. Especially when it comes to
dark colours like black. Dye is usually passed through the sheepskin 3-4
times to set the colour. Consider what could happen when it rubs of on
bare feet (ugg boots are designed to be worn without socks) or if it is
washed.
Only 5 years ago most of Australian sheepskins were tanned
in Australia. Now all these tanneries are closed due to cost concerns.
Almost all skins are now sent to China where they can be processed and dyed for
a fraction of the cost. What will this saving cost the consumer
and the Environment?
